SPECULATION: ESKANDARIAN TO RED BULLS PICKING UP STEAM

First Ives, now Frank Giase at the Newark Star Ledger is calling for Alecko Eskandarian to return home to Jersey. There is no doubt Toronto will require a solid experienced backup keeper, especially if Greg Sutton is away playing for Canada or goes down with an injury, as he did last year for the Montreal Impact. It is also true that Jon Conway is one of the remaining Johnston favourites on the New York Roster.Elie Ikangu, Joe Vide, and Marvell Wynne are others who were assembled by the current Toronto coach and wouldn't count as SI's on the roster (Taylor Graham was listed here originally, yet upon further investigation he would count take up an USA SI spot which is unlikely). The move to acquire Nick Rimando last week leaves New York with two relatively high priced keepers, after the purchase of Dutchman Ronald Watterreus last month. Is Conway worth Eskandarian or the partial allocation used to purchase Esky? Not in my estimation. And does Sir Mo like him enough to trade away Eskandarian, and allow a backup keeper to use up one of the coveted USA International spots on the roster - who knows?

If there is truth to to this, perhaps Sir Mo is looking at a package that may include a youth international player like Ikangu or Vide to be thrown in. The way I see it, Conway will be released shortly - why not simply wait it out if your TFC? At that point, Sir Mo can work from a stronger position with regard to trading one of the three US Internationals, if making room for Conway becomes necessary.

"Sir Mo" - what a joke. Johnston & Lalas were a disaster last year for us. You guys should thank the lord that Gansler is there to keep him in check. Expect a long year in Toronto, I'd bet he and O'Brien live happilly for 4 games before one has to go.

Eskandarian is washed up. You crazy canuks will like him he even wears a hockey helmet during games.

There's currently nothing to stop NY from demanding compensation should Conway be waived. It's dangerous to assume that changes before the season starts.

My argument was an Eskandarian for Conway trade (straight up) doesn't measure up fairly. I think its fair to suggest that if this is really in the works, Toronto should look to get more back in return. With all three USA International spots on the TFC roster taken, additional players must be eligible for youth international status - of which there are only a few on the New York Roster. I had originally thought Taylor Graham was younger, however upon checking, I discovered he would count as a USA SI, which is unlikely. As for Sir Mo - he's done a very good job thus far and has been a great ambassador for the team and league. His fate, like all managers, will ultimately be decided by wins, losses, and the quality of play on the field. We have to give him the benefit of the doubt for.

there would be no compensation (never has been) if a waived player was claimed RIGHT AWAY by another team. Like Eric Denton last fall. After 2-3 days if noone claims the player, then the rights revert back to the origianl team and compensation is required (that is the part of the rule rumored by mlsunderground to being done away with).
